After medical school I began training in Internal Medicine, but felt the pull of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatobiliary disease (“GI Pathology”), in particular. Following a residency and then a fellowship in GI Pathology at the Mayo Clinic and University of Washington, I served on staff at the Mayo Clinic for nine years.
My affinity for GI pathology has lead me to develop and head the Gastrointestinal Pathology Division of Hospital Pathology Associates for 22 years (recruiting six additional GI pathologists to our team in the process), author or co-author over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, co-author a liver pathology textbook (with Dr. Jurgen Ludwig), lecture widely, and to develop close working relationships with a large number of excellent clinicians in the upper Midwest, which gives me my greatest professional satisfaction.
My main professional goal is (and has been) to translate cutting edge gastrointestinal, liver and pancreas disease concepts into daily practice for myself and across our entire team of HPA pathologists, and also to pathologists everywhere through lectures and publications.
I enjoy spending time with family and outdoor activities. Golfing, gardening, fishing, camping and physical fitness activities keep me busy outside of work.
A fun fact about me is that I ran a leg of a state champion mile relay team earlier in my life.
